New Police Beat Surgeries launched at College
Portland College, the national specialist College for people with disabilities based in Mansfield, launched their new Police Beat Surgeries in partnership with Nottinghamshire Police on Tuesday 4th October 2011.

The Freedom of Exploration launched at Wollaton Hall
On Thursday 22nd September, The Freedom of Exploration exhibition was officially launched at the Yard Gallery at Wollaton Hall, Nottingham. Attended by our Governors, Senior Managers, former students and Friends of Portland members, the launch was a great success with six fantastic pieces of artwork being sold on the opening night.

Longest serving staff member retires after 39 years service
On Wednesday 31st August 2011 Portland College’s longest serving member of staff, David Brittain, took his well earned retirement after an impressive 39 years of continuous service.

Celebrating achievement at Annual Awards Day
The rainy weather couldn’t dampen the spirits at Portland College on Friday 8th July as we held our Annual Awards Day. The event celebrates the achievements of students, staff and volunteers at the College and the glitzy ceremony was once again attended by over 200 people.

Portland staff conquer the Three Peaks Challenge
Between 26th and 27th May 2011, a team of Portland College staff completed the Three Peaks Challenge to start the fundraising campaign towards a new Leisure Centre. The nine team members, drawn from all over the College, had set themselves the challenge of walking up and down the three highest mountains in the UK in just 24 hours.

999 Day held at Portland College
On Thursday 12th May 2011, Portland College held their annual 999 Day. The event is aimed at teaching the College’s foundation learners about important issues such as personal safety, fire and road safety, first aid and safety at home.

International Powerlifting Success for Portland Learner
During April one of Portland’s current Foundation Learners Jake Norris flew out to Dubai to compete in the IWAS (International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation) World Junior Games, coming home with a bronze medal to show for his efforts.

Portland College student pilots innovative Forklift Truck scheme
At the end of March, employment student Richard Fletcher was involved in a pilot scheme with West Nottinghamshire College to drive a specially adapted Forklift Truck.

The OSCARS nominations are out and the Speech and Language Team at Portland College are part of the Community Learning Disability Speech and Language Therapy Service that has been shortlisted for two awards in Nottinghamshire Healthcare’s Outstanding Service Contribution and Recognition Scheme.

Portland to exhibit at Kidz in the Middle
On Thursday 10th March 2011, Portland College will be exhibiting at the Kidz in the Middle exhibition at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. There will be members of the Student Recruitment team attending on the day to exhibit and provide information about life at College to the many visitors on the day.

Travel Training delivered at Portland
Portland College are currently working with Stagecoach East Midlands who have very generously provided one of their low floor buses to enable the delivery of independent travel training at the College’s Nottingham Road campus.

Portland’s respite offering successful once again
Our successful respite offering was once again a success during the October/ November half term as a large group of our learners stayed on campus.
The College introduced the offering this year as an extension to our core service following demand from parents and carers. Learners remain in College during half terms and spend this time together on visits, doing activities, sports and much more, with the emphasis on having fun, maintaining independence and continuing their College experience.

Donation helps students get on their bike
Students at Portland College will soon be ‘getting on their bike’ thanks to a £2,000 donation from the Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation which will go towards a specialist movement therapy bike.

Sporting success for Portland College
Portland College have again retained their title as regional champions at the Lord Taverners Table Regional Cricket Competition for the third consecutive year. The reigning national champions from Mansfield started the defence of their title by overcoming Ash Field School from Leicester in a hotly contested heat at Grace Road, the home of Leicestershire County Cricket Club.

Portland College achieve ‘Excellent’ Care Quality Commission Inspection Grade
Portland College, the national residential specialist college for people with disabilities, based in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, was recently the subject of an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The CQC regulate health and adult social care services in England, for services provided by the NHS, local authorities, private companies or voluntary organisations.

Portland College rated amongst the best in region for Health and Safety
Portland College, the national residential specialist college for people with disabilities, based in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, has recently been officially granted ‘Outstanding’ status for their Learner Health, Safety and Welfare performance by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC). This exceptional achievement means that the College is one of just four educational establishments in the region to receive this level of award.

Open Day for Professionals held at Portland College
Portland College opened their doors on 25th March 2010 to hold their first ever Professional Open Day. On Friday 10th July 2009, Portland College held its annual Awards Day which celebrates students and their abilities. Special guest Colin Price was on hand to present the honoured students with their awards. Colin, Paralympic medal winner and ex-international Wheelchair Basketball Captain for Great Britain said “that anything was possible as long as people worked as a team.”

The Portland Porkies qualify for national finals
On Saturday 13th June Portland College took two teams and 15 learners down to Reading to compete in the CP Sport Boccia League Team Competition, both teams played very well.
