Developing Independence – Portland Progress
Portland Progress can support you to develop your confidence, build new skills and gain valuable experience, helping you take positive steps towards your future.
The programme is suitable for anyone aged 19 and over, with or without an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), who wants to develop their skills, explore their options and work towards their personal goals.
The programme is designed to help you explore your options, identify your goals and work towards your aspirations. Whether you’re thinking about moving into the workplace, pursuing further learning, developing your independence or exploring other opportunities, Portland Progress can help you find a path that works for you.
Through Portland Progress, you’ll have the opportunity to develop practical skills, gain experience and build your confidence, while exploring different pathways that could help you achieve your goals. We can support you to recognise your strengths and interests, understand the opportunities available to you and identify the next steps that are right for you.
With a focus on your individual aspirations, Portland Progress provides a supportive environment where you can continue developing your skills, discovering new possibilities and preparing for the opportunities ahead.

Progress 1
Entry Level 3 NCFE Personal and Social development Skills which will be located on Portland College main campus every Monday 10am-4pm (term time only).
The topics that you are studying will be:
- Building confidence and self esteem
- Personal development
- Money
- Speaking and listening to take part in a discussion
- Home and personal safety awareness
- Using public transport – Buses and Trains
Progress 2
Level 1 NCFE Personal and Social development Skills which will be taught at Mansfield central library every Wednesday and Thursday 10am-4pm (term time only).
The topics you are studying will be:
- Healthy living
- Peer support skills
- Understanding Relationships
- Personal Finances
- Internet safety for IT users
- Safeguarding: Online and in daily life
- Money, time and temperature
- Volunteering
- Understanding cultural differences
- Alcohol Awareness
- Planning a trip (and going) to a visitor attraction (inc. using public transport)
- Rights and Responsibilities of citizenship
Alongside your course, if you would like it, you can also be supported with:
- CV writing
- Interview skills
- Application forms
- Progression onto other courses once you have finished.
- Support into paid or voluntary work
