A programme is totally bespoke to each individual’s needs and can include some of the following:
As part of the programme, Citizens are encouraged to access work experience placements along with supported access to the local community for activities such as a sport or fitness class. Citizens will also work with staff on a transition plan which will detail their aspirations for future living.
Tom McAndrew has been accessing Portland Freedom’s Independent Living programme for 1 year. Tom has acquired many new skills since joining the Portland Freedom Programme, and he says that; “before joining Portland Freedom I had never cooked a meal before. I have now learnt how to cook a full meal for myself, and also how to use a knife, which I used to struggle with.”
“I have learnt to swim and I now understand how to manage my money that I spend on leisure activities. The staff have also supported me with travelling into Mansfield independently, which has given me much more freedom. The best thing about my time at Portland Freedom though, is the friends I have made!”
Denise Elliott has been accessing the the Independent Living Programme for 1 year, and during that time Denise says; “I have learnt to cook (with support) and I also love to bake. Each week I have maths lessons, and I can now apply these skills when weighing out ingredients.”
“I really love to dance too, and there are lots of opportunities to sing and dance, whilst socialising with friends.”
