About Portland College

We are a vibrant national charity supported by our patron, Her Majesty the Queen. We have been a specialist college for young people with disabilities and associated learning difficulties for over 65 years.

About Portland Day Service

The Day Service runs Monday to Friday, 9.00am – 4.00pm. We support a wide range of adults with physical disabilities, learning disabilities and autism. Daily timetabled activities include cooking, arts & crafts, sports and accessing the local community. We are currently planning to increase the number of activities we provide each week.

The benefits of volunteering at Portland College

Portland College greatly values the services of its volunteer workforce. Thank you for considering giving up some of your time to support us.

We will provide you with a Volunteer Role Profile which details what your responsibilities are.

We will meet with you to check on your progress and to support you to develop in your role.

Role Description

This role will involve:

Supporting in an arts and crafts session that our Citizens participate in. This will be part of our Day Service timetable.

Supporting our citizens to join in with these sessions will enable them to:

  • learn new skills
  • have new experiences
  • develop self confidence
  • to have fun!

You must follow health and safety in the day service. This includes:

  • supporting with risk assessment processes for the activity you will be providing
  • reporting any hazards you may see on site
  • wearing your identity badge on site at all times
  • asking a member of staff for help if you are unsure about something

Our support staff will be in sessions to support our Citizens to get involved in the activity. This means you will not be working with our Citizens on an unsupervised basis at any time. Also, you will not be involved in providing personal care to Citizens. You will also help our staff with setting up the session and tidying away afterwards.

You don’t have to be fantastic at arts & crafts yourself, but you must be enthusiastic about getting involved in the session and to support others to develop their own skills.
