Leisure and Recreation
![]() |
The Enrichment Programme operates during the evening and at weekends and is open to all students from both departments. The programme is designed to offer leisure and enrichment activities for all students, but in particular supports and enhances the opportunities for Learning and Skills to develop their independence, social and life skills. Staffing is provided through the Learning and Skills Department and Nottinghamshire County Council Youth Workers.
The Enrichment Programme achieves this through encouraging learners to maintain and improve existing skills, develop new skills and access new activities, taking responsibility for their own Enrichment Timetables, making choices, getting information and advice. The vehicle for this includes sports, social activities e.g. discos, additional learning opportunities e.g. computer clubs, The Duke of Edinburgh award, drama and arts activities, karaoke, leisure outings etc. Students are able to contribute to the planning of activities through the ‘come and have your say’ and Student Forums (Students Council and Food Council).
Students also have opportunities to access the wider community and sample local, regional and national amenities through Sporting events and trips but also weekend trips to destinations such as Drayton Manor Park, Alton Towers and Twycross Zoo.
Sport at Portland

We offer a extremely varied Sports programme here at the college, we cater for students who may have never played sport before they came to the college up to Elite and International level.
At present we have eight teams in various sports competing locally, regionally and nationally.
We offer many sporting activities on the enrichment programme on a nightly basis as well as specialist coaching sessions at lunchtimes and at the weekends.
We are committed to developing new games such as Powerchair Football and the latest game we are looking at is Wheelchair Rugby League which is actually being developed by an ex Portland College student.
In addition to the activities we offer we also link with Nottinghamshire County Council Sport Direct Project with gives the students the opportunity to gain sporting qualifications and gain work placements.
Many of our students have gained Level 1 qualifications in Sports Leaders and various other sports and in addition to this they can also gain awards in First Aid and Child Protection. As a result of this many of our students get invited to volunteer at some of the counties most popular sporting events.
