Portland College and Jobs
The college’s remit from the Residential Training Unit is straightforward: get students into employment in the shortest time practicable. To achieve this objective we make every effort to provide the right training and support to our students, so they do obtain realistic and meaningful employment.
Our training is geared to the job and not to the acquisition of a certificate, although many of our students do achieve success in relevant examinations.
We offer a “roll-on, roll-off” system of entry, so students are invited to begin their training here soon after their assessment with us. There are no pre-set programme entry dates, students can begin training at a date acceptable to them and to the College. Providing there is accommodation and a place on the student’s chosen programme available, training will commence within a short time of assessment.
All students are provided with email accounts (to send off job applications, for example) and are given access to the internet for job seeking purposes. We have a dedicated job club (called the Preparation for Employment Department), where facilities such as telephones, local newspapers and experienced staff are readily at hand. Coaching for job interviews is provided. The emphasis of the employment department at Portland College is on our students getting into employment as soon as practically possible.
The whole focus, from the day students arrive for their assessment, is that they must be heavily involved in obtaining employment within their period of training at the College.
