Portland B team through to next round

On the 5th of March 2017, Portland College entered two teams into the first round of the FA People’s Cup; this competition is the largest in the UK for Disability Football.

The two teams were made up of both current Portland College learners and ex-Portland College learners including members of our staff. The event was run by the Nottinghamshire FA and took place at Long Eaton School, Nottingham.

Both teams came up against some very established sides including the likes of Derby County FC and Nottingham Riverside FC. Portland B had a very good start to the tournament winning their first match 2-0, with goals from Miles Green and Declan Ward. As the tournament progressed Portland B showed a lot of Teamwork, Passion and Sportsmanship which earned them 3rd place in their respective group. As it was the first time playing in a tournament of this magnitude for most of the players, both coaches were extremely impressed with the team’s performances and the way in which they conducted themselves both on and off the pitch.

Portland A had a tough start to the tournament but secured a win beating Sherwood Colliery FC 1-0 in their opening match. Portland A grew in strength throughout the tournament; they did not concede a goal on the route to the final, where they came out as overall winners beating Derby County FC 3-1. Portland A were crowned as Local Round Winners and progressed through to the Regional Finals which take place in Birmingham on Sunday 26th March.

All players showed discipline, integrity and determination throughout the day, impressing the tournament organizers. All players were respectful to the officials, opposing teams and the on-looking spectators. Portland College’s Football coaches were very proud of how the players conducted themselves on the day and felt they were a true credit to themselves, their families and Portland College. Players represented Portland College to the highest possible standard and displayed many skills and characteristics which we strive to learn and implement here at Portland College’s Fully Inclusive Sports Department.
