Royal Visit to Portland CollegeOn Tuesday 2nd November 2010 Portland College in Mansfield welcomed His Royal Highness The Duke of Kent for a visit to commemorate the specialist college’s 60th Anniversary.
HRH undertakes many Royal engagements supporting the armed forces and other organisations he is involved with and on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen, the Patron of the College since 1974.
He arrived at the College at 12.10pm and spent approximately 90 minutes on campus, with College principal Dr. Mark Dale and chairman Hugh Matheson escorting The Duke around the campus to learn more about the work that takes place at Portland and showcase the fantastic facilities available.
The Duke graduated from Royal Military College Sandhurst in 1955 and had a long career in the Army. He has subsequently maintained very deep connections with the armed forces and much of the purpose of the visit to Portland was for the College to showcase its developing provision for injured serving forces personnel and disabled veterans.
The Duke also met with a group of our Foundation Learners, discussing the fantastic work the College does for people with disabilities and discovering what life at Portland College is really like!
The culmination of the tour was the unveiling of a commemorative stone to mark the College’s Diamond Jubilee, together with HRH signing a Visitors’ Book to mark his visit.
Mark Dale said of the visit, “The visit from the Duke of Kent is very important to the College, particularly as we develop our provision for injured serving forces personnel. We are very excited that the visit from HRH maintains our connections with both the Royal Family and the armed forces.”
Together with the Duke, there were a number of other civic dignitaries including Sir Andrew Buchanan (Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire), Tony Egginton (Executive Mayor of Mansfield District Council), Ruth Marlow (Managing Director of Mansfield District Council), Mick Parker (Chairman of Ashfield District Council) and Philip Marshall (Chief Executive of Ashfield District Council).
