Art Zone

The Arts programme is designed to open up the imagination and develop creativity, an area where there are many transferable skills. Drama, for example, gives learners the opportunity to develop interpersonal skills in a relaxed atmosphere. Dance and movement develop muscle tone and promote the value of exercise. The dance and drama students are regularly involved in productions on campus and in the community.

Learners often only need a little help to develop skills they find absorbing and are keen to participate, producing work that is shown regularly in exhibitions and performances.

Portland Radio

Portland Radio has been running for the last three years and has proved to be very popular with our Students. Initially starting as a small enrichment activity we now a have timetabled session as part of our curriculum.

Learners get to do a variety of activities throughout the year which include.

Recording interviews with learners and staff, informing the college community of activities and important dates, reminding about enrichment, announcing birthdays reporting about college sporting success, interviews with students who have been performing in live shows, informing about EDI events around the country and the college and sharing student opinions about college life.

Portland Radio is an important part of our Student Voices; it allows students freedom of speech and helps them to understand the complexities of things like censorship and responsible reporting.

We have had some great success with reporters going on to work with local hospital radio, and have also developed links and shared radio stations with local mainstream colleges and other specialist colleges in the UK thus enabling our learners to reach a wider audience and share ideas and work in the wider community.

Mansfield Train Adoption

The College entered into a local partnership in 2010 and ‘adopted’ Mansfield Train Station. All parties involved have a different role in maintaining the Station and encouraging the public of Mansfield to use the facilities and transport links there. Some of our learners worked closely with tutor Andrew Burton in producing four beautiful murals depicting notable areas of the town which are now prominently displayed in the waiting room alongside a plaque describing Portland’s involvement.
