Care and Nursing
Changing to a local doctor
Students do not have to change doctors when they begin at Portland College and can remain with their home GP, unless parents expressly wish to change their son/daughter to our local GP. If a student remains with their home GP and is ill, we will arrange for them to see our local doctor as a temporary resident.

Medicines during College closures
During College closures, if a student is registered with our local GP, we will send all medication home and (if appropriate) any prescriptions.
If a student is still registered at their home GP, we will send all relevant medication in stock at College back home. We would also request that for any students registered at home that parents/ carers organise a two month prescription where possible. This is preferred by our nursing department and eliminates the hassle of chasing prescriptions on a regular basis.
We would kindly ask that any medication which is sent home with students during college closures is returned to the Nursing Department when students come back to Portland.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can you provide support for my son/ daughter’s hospital appointment?
A: Yes, if this is within the East Midlands. If the appointment is for further away, then it may not be practical for us to have nurses out of the department for such a length of time, but we will support wherever we can.
Q: How can I contact the Nursing Department urgently?
A: Our contact details are as follows:
Direct telephone: 01623 499107
Fax number: 01623 499108
Q: What are the working hours of the Nursing department?
A: We work between Monday and Friday, 8.00am to 6.00pm.
Q: Can we fax urgent prescriptions to you?
A: Yes – we work alongside Boots who will accept a fax prescription from us. This means that if your son/ daughter needs something urgently, we can take the faxed version and collect medication quicker than waiting for the original in the post.
