After Portland

What’s next for your son/ daughter?

Transition after Portland College is about planning for the future and enabling students to live more independently.

From the first term tutors draft a transition plan for all foundation learners which is discussed at their regular reviews and amended where necessary; all work undertaken on transition is tailored to meet individual learners’ requirements, capabilities and expectations.

There is a dedicated Transitions service within College together with external advice and expertise. Connexions Advisers visit the College on a regular basis to discuss with students their plans for the future. The purpose of these visits is to provide realistic and appropriate guidance.

As parents and carers, you play an important role in the transition of your son/ daughter. We encourage involvement at reviews and transitions meetings to ensure that transition plans are consistent with parent/carers’ wishes where appropriate, especially with destinations and residence upon leaving Portland. We also recognise and emphasise that it is never too early to begin thinking about students’ destinations after Portland, and many students begin College with us already having a clear idea of their future plans.

If you have any questions about the process or wish to find out more information, please use the contact details below and get in touch.

Success for former foundation learners

For the academic year 2009-2010, 64% of Foundation Learners who moved on from Portland College went on to further studies within a General FE College, with another 21% accessing Community Services and 3% moving into work-based training. Approximately 12% of leavers in this year also transitioned into employment, in a voluntary or supported employment capacity.

Furthermore, over 40% of learners who left us in 2010 did not go back home! The majority of this figure went into Supported Independent Living, being able to live on their own but with support as and when required. The remainder of this figure went either into long-term residential care or into other accommodation provided by local authorities/ specialist housing associations.
