Advice for Parents and Carers

Making the right choice

We recognise and understand that ensuring your son or daughter receives the very best education and support services will be the priority of any parent or carer.

You can be assured that their development as a person is of upmost importance to us and is vital to their daily living when they leave us and in the future. We like to think that most of our learners can go on to live in supported accommodation after college where they can continue this development.

Our transition team works hard to ensure that from the very beginning, learners plan for continued learning after college or even finding work.

We expect learners to be as independent as possible whilst at college by taking control, making decisions and doing more things for themselves.

They are encouraged to make as many friends as possible and may even find a boyfriend or girlfriend. We support our learners in this decision and monitor relationships to help them manage this area of their lives.

Parents are encouraged to keep in regular contact through telephoning, email and social networking sites which learners can have access to in the evenings and at weekends.

If you have any questions or concerns please call the student recruitment team on 01623 499186 or email studentrecruitment@portland.ac.uk who will be more than happy to help.

Alternatively, why not come along to one of our Open Days and see for yourself.
