World Book Day 2011 celebrated at Portland College

On 3rd March 2011, learners at Portland celebrated World Book Day, presenting a great opportunity for everyone to get involved in the world of literature and reading.

Throughout the day, there were a wide range of activities organised based around books and learning through reading. This included students researching their favourite authors, creation of a short film based around Ben Hur, members of staff doing readings of popular books, and games based around words and letters.

There was a band of ‘Merry Men’ roaming around College as one of the tutor groups dressed as the characters from Robin Hood, and they were met by a band of Pirates (one of whom is pictured above) coming the opposite way across campus, straight out of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island!

The whole day was a great success, and all of our tutor groups showed their support of their peers by going around the College and discovering new books and classrooms decorated to those themes. The day also highlighted to the students how the modern film industry has been influenced by classic literature.
