Successful Open Day marked with Greenhills Garden Centre launch

On Friday 1st April 2011, Portland opened their doors to all for their second annual Public Open Day.

The Open Day provided a fantastic opportunity for members of the public to see the College facilities and beautiful surroundings, together with meeting learners and staff on a normal working day. There were also sessions in expressive art and disability sports for attendees to join in with, as well the chance to meet with the College Governors for a Q&A session, finding out about the history of Portland and discovering the role of volunteering and fundraising at the College.

The event launched at 10.00am with the official opening of the new Greenhills Garden Centre who have relocated to the College campus. Rob Foster, Mansfield 103.2’s Lazy Gardener cut the ribbon to officially open the Centre and the Open Day.

Mark Dale, Principal and CEO of Portland College says of the venture, “In a small but very exciting way Portland enters a new era with our joint venture with Greenhills Garden Centre opening for business. This is our first joint commercial venture and we are really excited about working with a respected and experienced company to bring this to the College. The Garden Centre will provide a new range of work experience opportunities for our students and it should attract many more visitors to our site and support the Coffee Shop.”

Situated next to Portland’s fantastic Coffee and Gift Shop, the new Centre will have everything you need for your garden and feature specialist roses grown by Gregory’s Roses from Nottingham.
