Sporting success for Portland College
Portland College have again retained their title as regional champions at the Lord Taverners Table Regional Cricket Competition for the third consecutive year. The reigning national champions from Mansfield started the defence of their title by overcoming Ash Field School from Leicester in a hotly contested heat at Grace Road, the home of Leicestershire County Cricket Club.
Over 50 teams from around the country have been taking part in regional heats and Portland College will be joining the winners from each region to play at the National final at Lords on the 15th June 2010. Portland won their heat by winning all three matches against their opponents from Leicester, with victory in the final game being assured on the very last ball!
The team of six cricketers from Portland College was made up of four members of last year’s national champions, but impressively featured two players making their competitive debuts for the College.
Dave Winter, Sports Coordinator at Portland said, “The team were under pressure to perform today and did a fantastic job of staying calm and concentrating on playing to their abilities. The whole College is proud of the teams achievement today and they will be training hard now in the lead up to the finals.”
Portland College were also recently crowned as champions of the Notts Ability Counts Football League held once a month at Dukeries Leisure Centre, Ollerton. As well as Portland, there have been teams from Red Oaks Day Centre, Whitewater Day Centre, Wycar Leys Residential Unit and The Eden Housing Project. There has been some excellent football played and some memorable matches, but the Portland College team managed to go through the 22 games losing only once and were crowned champions last Tuesday.
