Portland College compete in Table Cricket Finals
On 15th June 2010, Portland College’s Table Cricket team competed in their 5th consecutive national finals at Lord’s Cricket Ground hoping to retain their crown as national champions for the third consecutive year.
The team played and won their first three games on the trot against teams from Ipswich, Stevenage and Gloucestershire but unfortunately were then narrowly beaten by a sports college from Newcastle. This meant the team had to compete in a play-off for third and fourth place which they lost to a team from Wigan on the last ball. The team had to settle for a final position of fourth, which given the level of competition is still a major achievement and one of which the team can be justifiably proud.
Throughout the tournament, the Portland team lost just 11 wickets in 4 group games and came within just one solitary run of achieving a third place finish.
This game turned out to be the end of an era, as it would be the current squads last ever competitive game together as squad members Amy Boler, Steven Evans, Katie Grice, Mickey Bosworth, Alan Morledge and Jesca Hindley either leave Portland in July or have reached the age limit for table cricket.
Dave Winter, Sports Co-ordinator said, “I am extremely proud of all of our squad in being amongst the very best Table Cricket teams in the whole country. The squad were very hardworking and gave up their own time week after week from September to train and prepare; they did themselves and the College proud in a very competitive tournament and I only hope the next generation of cricketers from the College can show the same levels of commitment and dedication.”
The team will however be in action for one final time, as next week the team will be attempting to break a world record at Trent Bridge Cricket Ground as they join other local cricketers with the aim to be part of the biggest cricket match in history.
