OSCARS nominations for Portland College therapy team

OSCARS nominations for Portland College therapy team

The OSCARS nominations are out and the Speech and Language Team at Portland College are part of the Community Learning Disability Speech and Language Therapy Service that has been shortlisted for two awards in Nottinghamshire Healthcare’s Outstanding Service Contribution and Recognition Scheme.

Working across the College, the Speech and Language Team comprises four therapists and two assistants from the Nottinghamshire Healthcare team, with their aim being to encourage a 24-hour approach to promoting student communication. They are responsible for providing students at College with individual and group therapy, supporting the use of communication aids, producing symbolised resources, and supporting communication in classroom, social and community settings.

The work of the speech and language therapy service during the past 12 months has led to two nominations from Nottinghamshire Healthcare in the ‘Innovator of the Year’ and ‘Team of the Year’ award categories. The first nomination is based around the ‘innovative, comprehensive and high quality learning and development opportunities programme delivered’, much of which forms the basis for the speech and language therapy training delivered at College. The second nomination is for ‘supporting people with learning disabilities through project based community work.’

Sally Edwards, Speech and Language Therapy Manager, said of the nominations, “We are delighted to receive nominations for such important awards and hope that they emphasise the high quality service that we are delivering as a team. The work we are doing within both Portland College and the wider Nottinghamshire Healthcare community is very important in changing the lives of people with disabilities and it is pleasing to see speech and language therapy support recognised as part of this.”

The OSCARS Awards Ceremony, now in its 8th year, will take place on 17th March 2011 at the East Midlands Conference Centre in Nottingham where many teams and individuals will be acknowledged for the excellent healthcare work they offer the people of Nottinghamshire.
