Local Partnership adopts Mansfield railway station
A local partnership made up of Portland College, Mansfield District Council, East Midlands Trains, Mansfield Town Centre Partnership and the British Transport Police today launched their adoption of Mansfield railway station as part of East Midlands Trains Station Adoption scheme.
The scheme aims to create station environments that customers, communities and East Midlands Trains can be proud of, and the adopters’ role is to maintain the overall presentation and upkeep of Mansfield station.
Each of the local partners will have a different role throughout the duration of their adoption with the partnership working towards creating a sense of public ownership, encouraging use of the station and working towards a safer station free from crime and the fear of crime.
The launch will take place on Wednesday 18 November 2009, and will be attended by officials from each of the adopting companies, and murals designed and produced by the students at Portland College will be unveiled within the station.
Students from Portland College’s Horticulture programme have also produced a number of evergreen planted boxes and will regularly visit the station to carry out inspections alongside representatives from the British Transport Police.
East Midlands Trains have committed to maintaining the planters and ensuring that the station remains presentable and welcoming to the public.
Mansfield District Council provide security and maintenance at the station; opening and locking up the premises each day as well as repair work and plumbing when necessary.
The District Council’s Town Centre Rangers also patrol the area and the car park, while the Enviro-Crime Enforcement Officer will support the British Transport Police in dealing with any anti-social behaviour issues.
CCTV operators based at Mansfield District Council also monitor Mansfield railway station as well as Bulwell, Hucknall, Newstead, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Sutton Parkway and Mansfield Woodhouse.
Councillor Kate Allsop, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration at Mansfield District Council, commented: “I am pleased that Mansfield District Council and Mansfield Town Centre Partnership are involved with the Station Adoption Scheme.
“As a District Council, we have always supported and lobbied for a regular passenger service and station for the people of the area. It is heartening, therefore, that this partnership will see a real commitment to the station’s upkeep.”
