Portland College rated amongst the best in region for Health and Safety

Portland College, the national residential specialist college for people with disabilities, based in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, has recently been officially granted ‘Outstanding’ status for their Learner Health, Safety and Welfare performance by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC). This exceptional achievement means that the College is one of just four educational establishments in the region to receive this level of award.

The LSC has funded many of the Foundation Learners within the College, who have a range of complex and multiple disabilities and needs, both congenital and acquired. Assessment of Learner Health, Safety and Welfare is an important part of ensuring that colleges and schools throughout the country are achieving the standards required for the levels of funding they receive.

Portland’s assessment took place in December 2009 and highlighted the significant investment and dedication to improving performance taking place since the previous ‘Good and Improving’ status of 2008. The implementation of a new Health and Safety Audit Framework, development of disaster planning procedures and proactive preparation for the requirements of the Independent Safeguarding Authority which ensures the safety of students and staff, have all contributed to the success of the most recent assessment.

Tracy Eato, Assistant Principal Development and Facilities, said of the achievement:
“Achieving the Outstanding status for Health, Safety and Welfare is testament to the hard work and the dedication of the multi-disciplinary team here at Portland College. The issue of Health, Safety and Welfare is massively important within any college or school, but is even more significant for our college as we are both residential and support people with disabilities. The achievement of this status recognises that our approach is amongst the very best in the region. We are continually looking to improve our services to students from the disabled community, and we see their health, safety and welfare as a priority.”
