Specialist Employment Support

Specialist Employment Support

Portland College deliver Specialist Employability Support (SES) programme, one of the Department for Work and Pension’s main programmes to help disabled people to find and stay in work.

The service supports disabled people who need support to enter work or undertake work-related courses and activities.

Our SES service is for disabled clients in need of personal support and expertise to move them towards and into employment.

The support on offer includes:

  • Personal face-to-face support focusing on individual needs;
  • Specialist expertise from a team of experienced employment consultants;
  • Group activities and mentoring to improve skills and build confidence;
  • Advice on where to get help with non-disability related barriers to work;
  • Support with independent travel;
  • Access to work placement opportunities

There are two main types of support available:

SES Start Back is a short-term provision (up to 3 months) for those customers who after receiving some specialist support could be ready to move into work or another provision.

SES Main Provision provides access to more intensive employability support and is intended for those customers who may require a longer journey to overcome multiple or more complex barriers to employment.

How do I know if I am eligible?

To be eligible you need to be able to meet the following criteria:

You must not currently be in employment.

  • You need to 18 years old or over.
  • Be disabled as defined by the Equality Act 2010.
  • Have a disability or health condition that has a significant impact on your ability to gain employment.
  • Your needs not currently able to be met by other DWP provision such as Work Choice or Work Programme.

How do I get on to the SES programme?

You will need to be referred to the programme via a Disability Employment Advisor (DEA) at your local Jobcentre Plus. Although, some referrals can also be made from other routes such as SRO’s (Statutory Referral Organisation).

Once we receive a referral we will contact you to arrange a Start-Up meeting. We prefer to do this face to face and this can take place in the closest available location to you.

I am a DEA how do I refer my client to your programme?

Portland College is delivering SES as part of a special purpose vehicle, Steps to Employment Ltd – this is a partnership of three organisations St. Loye’s Foundation, Enham Trust and Portland College.
